Artisan Wednesday Wow ~ Foxy Oxi

April Hop

Welcome to April! It seems that we’re still not any closer to Spring at the beginning of April than we were at the beginning of March where I live but I’m jumping right into something Summery … well sort of, sailing and nautical  things are summer to me!

I brought a couple of things together on this project. .. a technique called, Foxy Oxi that I had done with my technique club last month and something that us team members might call, ‘channeling our Inner Cathy or Jane’… doodles, vellum, splattering and ink techniques.. I had fun with this 8 x 8 page and it wasn’t hard or scary to dive into either!  Have a peek and I’ll share that card here too!

I saw this technique done by Beate and had to give it a try.  I started this page off by sponging on some ink in the colors that co-ordinated with the High Tide DSP (I used Pool Party and Pacific Point).  I applied it to my page in places that would end up framing my photo.  If you remember last week’s post, my son turned 10 last week. This photo is him at 6 months and he was thrilled to see this page! I’ve been so afraid to scrapbook his photos for fear that I wouldn’t do them justice but am happy at how this turned out.

I’ll share some step by step photos on how to achieve the Foxy Oxi technique but first wanted to show you all of the details of the page.  I used the greeting from Hello Sailor and stamped it with Versamark and heat set with Pewter Embossing Powder.  I wanted to add bubbles for more of a water feel so I just punched circles out of Carstock Vellum and then ‘doodled’ on them with a Basic Grey marker.  .. This would be where I channelled my inner Cathy.  I also tied the doodles into a border around the entire page.

Here’s where I added in more doodling and then added  a touch of Jane to my page with a little cardboard under my photo and then sewed the elements together.

Here’s another Jane element, I layered one of the whales that I hand cut from the DSP onto some cardboard for some extra dimension and to make the whale more sturdy.  Jane taught us all how fun it can be to add a different level of dimension to your projects with a touch of cardboard, (just peel apart the flaps of your SU boxes, it’s that easy!).   You can see under the whale how the cardboard gives it depth.

It all came together to frame the photo like this.

Before I jump into the step by step photos, I’ll share the card that I did with my technique club.

We used Life in the Forest and Jen’s fabulous sun idea using the banner punch.  She is brilliant!

Now, here’s how you do the Foxy Oxi technique.

First, sponge on the colors of your choice in the pattern that you’d like. For the card above, we covered the whole piece of Whisper White cardstock.  In the sample below (that become the page above) I just framed where the photo would go.

Once you have ink where you’d like it, sprinkle on some Oxi Clean.  Where you apply it will end up bleaching out the color so apply as much or as little as you’d like, depending on how you want your splotches to look.

After it’s sprinkled with Oxi Clean, spritz all over it with water and one of the SU Spritzer bottles so that it’s got a mist of water over top but isn’t soaking.  Once it dries (you can spead this up with a heat gun) and has bleached out the color to your liking, wipe off the Oxi Clean with a paper towel.  That’s it, that’s all and it creates a different look each time but is fun to watch your paper transform.

You can really see here, how the Oxi Clean bleaches out the color and makes it look very mottled.  Be liberal with your sponging when you first begin if you still want a vibrant (or somewhat so) end result.  Have fun!

Note: If you are concerned about the archival quality of this technique you may want to take extra measures to protect your photos and avoid using ones that you can’t get reprinted or reproduced.  I did actually layer the photo on cardboard as well to even out the depth underneath the photo (since the top portion has cardboard under it) and that will help keep the photo away from direct contact with residue from the Oxi Clean.

Now, let’s go see what Becky has to share.  I can’t wait to see the projects that come out of a whole new box of products for April!

We’ll be doing a give away this month too, so be sure to get in the practice of leaving comments… it’ll be the only way to win!
